Jon Kovach is President of Afirm, headquartered in Fort Collins, Colorado. A driven, focused, and motivated leader, he has strategically led the company to become one of the largest North American inspection companies in the industry, more than doubling in size since 2010.
During his more than 25 years with Afirm (formerly US-Reports), Jon has been integral to the company’s continued growth—leading strategic acquisitions, developing new products and expanding key relationships. As President, he holds training and talent development in high regard, which has led to the technical ability for Afirm to run the inspections, loss control, and premium audits departments for insurance companies.
Jon earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Columbia State University and holds an Associate in Premium Auditing (APA) designation.
Chief Operating Officer, Executive Vice President
Steve Heston brings three decades of experience to Afirm. As Chief Operating Officer and Executive Vice President, he runs all operations for the organization. Steve is responsible for field operations, training development, contractors, and recruiting efforts within the organization, supervising approximately 800 indirect reports.
Among Steve’s achievements include several professional designations such as Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Hazard Control Manager (CHCM), Certified Environmental Manager (CEM), and holds a FSR certification in Texas and Arkansas. He has had the honor to serve as an invited speaker at numerous industry events and meetings and has been a contributor to university studies on workplace safety and occupational illness.
Steve is a graduate of Bowling Green State University and holds an Associate’s Degree in Applied Science and a Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Health.
Senior Vice President
Alan Singer brings more than four decades of experience to Afirm. As Senior Vice President, he is a strategic advisor responsible for building relationships with insurance partners, navigating legal issues, and overseeing the acquisition and integration of new partners into the Afirm family.
Prior to Afirm, Alan spent decades in the construction industry and practicing law, making it a natural fit to move into the inspections industry. He is a member of the State Bar of Michigan and serves as a founding board member of the Pediatric IBD (Intestinal Bowel Disease) Foundation. He previously served on the board of the Jewish Federation and Foundation of Metropolitan Detroit where he was Chairman of its Real Estate division and was a Board member of the Builders Association of Southeastern Michigan.
Alan holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science from the University of Michigan and a Juris Doctor (J.D.) from the University of Detroit, School of Law.
Vice President, Premium Audit
Debbie Guthrie serves as Vice President, Premium Audits of Afirm. Since joining Afirm nearly 30 years ago, Debbie’s responsibilities include managing Afirm’s premium audit functions nationwide.
She oversees multiple departments, including quality control for premium audit, premium extensions, and processing and data entry. Debbie’s decades of experience and loyalty have been pivotal to Afirm’s growth and success. She plays an active role in working with clients, monitoring and sharing the latest premium audit industry communications, resources and changes to their nationwide base of auditors and staff.
Debbie is a member of the National Society of Insurance Premium Auditors (NSIPA), and has contributed several educational written articles. She is also involved in the Rocky Mountain Insurance Auditors Association (RMIAA).
Vice President, Canadian Operations
As the Vice President of Canadian operations for Afirm, Gilles brings more than 30 years of experience in fire protection and loss control services. Gilles oversees Afirm’s Toronto office, leading the team in strategic planning and technical expertise. He thrives on building long-term relationships with clients.
An active member in the insurance community, Gilles proudly supports and reinvests in his craft. He is a Fellow Chartered Insurance Professional (FCIP), management and risk management major with the Insurance Institute of Canada (IIC), RIMS Fellow (RF), member of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE), Applied Science Technologist (A.Sc.T.), and he is the former president of IIC Society of Fellows (Southern Alberta Chapter). His appointment, by the Minister of Municipal Affairs, to serve for 10 years as the insurance industry’s representative on the Safety Codes and Fire Prevention Council in Alberta was a crowning achievement in Gilles’ career.
Gilles earned his Diploma of Technology in fire protection and industrial safety from Algonquin College of Applied Arts and Technology, a Management Development Certificate from the University of Calgary, and a Bachelor of Science degree in fire science with a minor in business administration from Western Oregon University.
Vice President, Loss Control & Risk Services
Dan is Vice President of Loss Control & Risk Services at Afirm, in its global headquarters in Colorado. With nearly 30 years of insurance industry expertise, Dan oversees the strategic vision and direction for commercial loss control, risk mitigation services, and personal lines, manages quality and regulatory issues, and is client liaison with national accounts.
As an active member of the Insurance Loss Control Association, Dan has served on its board for many years and has functioned as president twice – most recently in the 2015/2016 term. Continuing education is important to him, holding certifications such as a Certified Fire Protection Specialist (CFPS) with the National Fire Protection Association, and an Associate in Loss Control Management (ALCM) and Associate in Management (AIM) from the Insurance Institute of America.
Dan earned his Bachelor of Science in occupational health and safety from Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania.
